Introduction

Music ethnography is a modern academic tool for the preservation, representation and study of musical acts and processes. It is an important link in the development of musicology and art studies, and an important route to the transmission and dissemination of music culture. Organised by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the "Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival" (hereinafter referred to as CMEFF) was founded in 2019 and has been successfully held twice in Shanghai Grand Theatre and Gulangyu, Xiamen, as well as on tour in Taipei and Hualien, with more than 60 films screened.

CMEFF focuses on traditional music heritage, music performance and contemporary music life in China and the Chinese-speaking region, and is the first documentary film festival in China to focus on music.
